June 8, 2026 -- An elderly tenant died after fire broke out Friday morning in an Ocean Park apartment building, marking a rare fire-related fatality in Santa Monica.

Fire fighters responded to the residential structure fire at 2628 5th Street at approximately 8:37 a.m., Fire Department officials said.

"Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions in a second-floor apartment located at the rear of a two-story garden-style apartment complex.

"Crews encountered challenging conditions while gaining access and conducting search operations," officials said. "Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive interior attack and primary search of the apartment.

"The fire was brought under control shortly after firefighters gained entry to the apartment, preventing further expansion to neighboring units."

As crews continued to fight the fire and completed a secondary search, they located an elderly man inside the unit, Fire officials said.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died of injuries sustained in the fire. His identity has not been released, pending family notification.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Santa Monica Fire Department reminds residents that "working smoke alarms provide critical early warning in the event of a fire and can significantly increase the chances of safely escaping."

Residents should test smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries as needed, and ensure alarms are installed in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home, Fire officials said.

Residents are also encouraged to maintain clear exits, practice a home fire escape plan, and immediately call 911 if they discover smoke or fire.

"Early notification and rapid evacuation save lives," officials said.
