City Seeks Applicants for 'People's Academy'

By Lookout Staff

February 26, 2026 -- Those curious about the inner workings of Santa Monica's government can get an inside look by joining the City's new One SaMo People’s Academy, City officials announced Wednesday.

The six-week course explores "City operations, priorities and civic engagement opportunities" and will accept 25 "Santa Monica residents, college students, business owners, or community leaders."

The program "aims to build understanding, transparency and trust between Santa Monica residents and their local government," City officials said.

Applications for the program are due by March 16. Participants must be 18 or older, and a separate, one-day Youth Civic Leadership Day will be offered at a later date.

The program is "seeking a broad and representative group of participants that reflects the diversity of Santa Monica," officials said.

"Residents of all ages, backgrounds, neighborhoods, and lived experiences are encouraged to apply.

“Our goal is to assemble a cohort that represents the full spectrum of our community and brings a variety of perspectives to the conversation."

Participants will learn "how policies are developed, budgets are allocated and services are delivered."

Presentation topics include Government 101, public safety, City infrastructure and sustainability, transportation and land use, housing and human services and community programs.
