Mother Arrested After Injured Infant Dies

By Lookout Staff

January 7, 2025 -- A woman was arrested Tuesday after allegedly killing her infant child, who was hospitalized with "significant injuries" and later died, police officials said.

SMPD officers responded to an apartment near Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica after UCLA Police notified them shortly before noon that an adult female had been detained on the Westwood campus.

The woman informed campus police that "she had harmed her child and left the child inside an apartment in the 2200 block of Broadway," said Lt. Lewis Gilmour, the Police Department spokesman.

Responding officers found "an infant inside an apartment with significant injuries," Gilmour said.

The Santa Monica Fire Department responded and transported the infant to a local area hospital, where the child was later pronounced dead.

The adult female was taken into custody and transported to the Santa Monica Jail, Gilmour said, adding that "the identities of those involved are not being released at this time."

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, he said.

Detectives from the Santa Monica Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division are actively investigating the case.

"Based on preliminary information, this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community," Gilmour said.
