North Pavilion Opens
On the weekend of December 4 and 5, 2004, Saint John’s staff members
transported patients from the original Main Wing to the new North Pavilion,
officially opening the hospital’s new inpatient facility.
Both during and following the move, staff made sure patients continued
to receive the high quality care for which Saint John’s is known.
Extra measures were taken to ensure patients and their families felt secure
and comfortable in the new facility.
In particular, great attention was paid to one woman who was due to give
birth. Shortly after being relocated to the McAlister Women’s Health
Center on the 4th floor of the North Pavilion, she gave birth to a happy
and healthy baby boy named Charlie. More than 62 years had passed since
a Saint John’s patient gave birth outside of the Main Wing. Charlie
was a popular patient and joyful reminder of the Health Center’s
tradition of excellence.
Dismantling of Main Wing Scheduled to Begin
The move from the Main Wing to the North Pavilion signals significant
change for the neighborhood and Santa Monica. The dismantling of Saint
John’s Main Wing, which was erected more than 60 years ago by the
Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and which was damaged during the 1994
Northridge Eathquake, will begin in February 2005. Deconstruction is expected
to take up to four months, during which time precautions will be taken
to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding neighborhood and to hospital
patients.
- The current fence, which is located on 22nd Street along the north
side of the hospital campus, will remain in place and will be extended
further west to shield the neighborhood from dust, debris and noise
during the dismantling of the Main Wing.
-
The sidewalk side of the fence will be lighted to ensure neighborhood
safety. Additionally, the fence will be painted to brighten the neighborhood.
As mandated by the City of Santa Monica, construction work will only
take place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m.
and 5 p.m. on weekends. There will be no construction traffic or noise
on Sundays.
To further beautify the neighborhood, Saint John’s will plant
street trees on 23rd Street along the North Pavilion’s east side.
The construction hotline number is (310) 315-0071. Please call the hotline
if you have questions or concerns about the construction project.
Construction of the W.M. Keck Diagnostic and Treatment
Center is scheduled to begin in Summer 2005.
Parking Changes for Patients and Visitors
Removal of the Main Wing incurs changes to patient/visitor access
to the hospital. Patients and visitors will enter the hospital using one
of three entrances:
The Denney Court valet parking entrance on Santa Monica Boulevard will
remain open. Outpatients will be discharged through Denney Court.
- The Lot C valet parking entrance on Santa Monica Boulevard will remain
open. Lot C provides convenient access to the North Pavilion and to
the hospital’s South Wing. Inpatients will be discharged from
the North Pavilion through Lot C.
- Patients and visitors who wish to self-park are encouraged to use
the Held parking structure, which is accessed off of 20th Street. Visitors
parking in the Held structure will take the elevators to the ground
floor and proceed to Denney Court.
- With the opening of the North Pavilion, the patient drop-off/pick-up
cul-de-sac on Arizona and 22nd Street was closed. The new fence on the
north side of the hospital seals off access to the cul-de-sac.
Cafeteria and Gift Shop Moved to South Win
The Cafeteria has been reestablished on the ground floor of the South
Wing where the laboratory was housed before it moved to the North Pavilion
last October. The facility will also provide a temporary Team Room for
meetings and hospital gatherings. The Gift Shop is conveniently located
nearby.
