June 9, 2014 -- In an effort to manage an anticipated influx of visitors to Downtown Santa Monica during the summer months, the City has announced a new traffic management program called “Go with the Flow.”

Designed to keep cars moving, streets safer and parking easier to find, the program designates every weekend and holiday as a “Go with the Flow” day through Labor Day.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., traffic officers and City staff will be out in force -- directing drivers in and out of the Public Parking Structures, relieving crowded intersections and trouble spots, and keeping intersections clear of gridlock, according to officials.

The strategy also includes banning left turns when entering or exiting Downtown’s eight Public Parking structures.

City officials hope this will keep traffic flowing and reduce backups entering and exiting the structures, which have a total of 5,229 spaces within a four-block stretch.

In addition, signs will be placed at major routes into town notifying drivers of lots with spaces available. Additional signs will direct drivers to the South Beach lots instead of Downtown.

Officials recommend that visitors come early to Downtown Santa Monica and leave later after peak traffic hours.

They also recommend that motorists plan their driving routes and parking destinations before heading out on the road.

To get real time availability, City officials recommend visitors download the Santa Monica Parking app.
