April 11, 2013 -- Have you wanted to learn how to make soap, dance the Tango, write a travelogue or sew on a hand-cranked sewing machine? Have you ever wanted to participate in some urban guerrilla art?

This Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Santa Monica's Camera Obscura building in Palisades Park will host a slew of free mini workshops for adults interested in trying out some new hobbies.

“Bring your unfinished project and get some tips, learn a new trick, help LA's boldest guerrilla crafters or just relax and work in a congenial atmosphere,” officials said.

At 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. “cultural renegade” Marcus Kuiland-Nazario will give participants a taste of his “Crafternoon” adult crafting party.

“Turn any room into festivities central by creating streamers from fabric, paper, found objects and 6-foot lengths of twine,” officials said.

For those with a yearning for simpler times, SewCranky will be on site all day to demonstrate antique hand cranked sewing machines.

“The ultimate in green homesteading! You can try your hand at making a simple water bottle holder on these gorgeous working artifacts,” officials said.

Anyone looking to brush up on their knitting skills, Angharad Caceres, life-long crafter and former owner of Santa Monica's Urban Craft Center, will teach beginners “basic stitches as well as cables, continental knitting, and moss stitch.”

More advanced knitters can “get tips and work out tricky bits, or examine some bead purse knitting on size 0000s!”

Caceres will lead her workshops at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.

If you are into using your skills to cause a bit of chaos in the world, you can help Yarn Bombing Los Angeles prepare to yarn-bomb a museum from 12 to 2 p.m.

“On May 25th, 2013 the knit graffiti collective Yarn Bombing Los Angeles will be covering the facade of the Craft and Folk Art Museum on Wilshire Blvd in bold and colorful crocheted designs for a project entitled CAFAM Granny Squared,” officials said.

“CAFAM Granny Squared is a community based public art project anyone on the street can enjoy,” officials said. “The project has brought together a community of 525 artists and crafters from 25 countries who otherwise might not have had access to exhibit their work in a museum.”

Saturday's event is just a sampling of what is offered at Camera Obscura.
