September 25 -- The School District has tapped
a veteran financial officer from Ventura County
as Assistant Superintendent in charge of Business
and Fiscal Services, district officials announced
last week.
Pending the approval of the School Board Janece
L. Maez will assume the post vacated by the departure
in December of former CFO Winston Braham, who
resigned in December after a public dispute with
top district officials over a tentative teachers’
contract.
The post had been temporarily filled by interim
CFO Dr. Steve Hodgson, the Glendale School District’s
former chief financial officer, a highly sought
management expert hired in February.
“Ms. Maez’s leadership skills and
ability to solve problems creatively and analytically
will be a valuable asset to SMMUSD,” said
Superintendent Dianne Talarico.
“Her focus on cooperative decision-making
and honest, open, and reliable communication will
be a complement to the district’s focus
on teamwork and accountability,” Talarico
said.
For 17 years, Maez was the Pleasant Valley School
District’s Assistant Superintendent in charge
of Fiscal and Administrative Services. Before
that, she worked in the Ventura Unified School
District’s fiscal department.
Maez comes highly recommended from several school
districts within California, district officials
said.
The search for a new CFO was conducted by School
Services of California, Inc., a leading provider
of management, governance, and fiscal consulting
services to school districts, county offices,
and community colleges, officials said.
Maez is a member of the California Association
of School Business Officials, and has served on
Soroptimist International, the American Association
of University Women, the American Legion Auxiliary,
and the Camarillo Arts Council, according to district
officials.
She attended the University of Washington and
the California Lutheran University,
officials said.
